Recently Jane Sansom uncovered a previously unknown item in a New Zealand archive: the handwritten te reo Maori journal of Eruera Karaka Te Ngara’s island voyage with the Melanesian Mission in 1862. This remarkable document sheds considerable light on Christian Maori views of Melanesians, and provides a welcome addition to scant European accounts of this particular voyage.  Among other things, it gives us more information about another Indigenous missionary - the Eromangan islander Mene - who visited Te Ngara and others aboard the missionary ship while the European missionaries were ashore.  We will also explore Te Ngara's rueful concluding comments about escalating warfare among his fellow Maori, and between them and the British colonial authorities, at the beginning of the land wars of the 1860s.
