Rachael Johnson

Dr Rachael Johnson a historian of eighteenth-century leisure and pleasure. Her research looks at the history of England’s spas and seaside resorts, particularly the Kentish towns of Tunbridge Wells and Margate.

Institute Roles

Rachael completed her PhD at the University of Leeds in 2014, looking at watering places in Kent between 1660 and 1820, considering in particular the resorts of Tunbridge Wells and Margate. She is currently writing a book which extends this research, titled The Georgians on Holiday.

Rachael’s most recent research looks into lives and careers of the Masters of Ceremony, those charismatic and fascinating characters who ran the social life of England’s watering places during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
